I'm Riding For

Kallie Swan my niece

Kallie Swan my niece

Kallie is now 5 yrs old and has been through a long year of treatment since being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). A type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. She has another year of treatment ahead of her, before being able to ring the bell for her last treatment. We all wish her well as she fights and continues this challenge with her caring family. I dedicate my ride again this year to Kallie Swan my great niece. She will be with me on every ride.

My Story

15 May 2025

I've had a slow start this year, bike issues and weather have been the main reasons but with 24 days left there is a lot of time to get the bike down the trails.

The big news this week is that "KICK CANCER'S BUTT day" is Wednesday August 9th. If you were considering making a donation this Wednesday is the day to do it. A major donor has put forward $1.3 million to match donations received on WEDNESDAY only. Help Kick Cancer's butt and make a difference. THANK YOU.

-------------

As August comes closer and the biking increasing I am now on pace of 150 km per week and ready to take on the Challenge physically. With the physical part in place, I wanted to share my thoughts from a recent ride with you.

I debated sharing this, but think it is important that you might better understand why I continue to ride in this Great Cycle Challenge to fight children's cancers.

My total ride was about 58 km., with lots of time to think during that ride. Two specific area of the trip stay with me. As I wandered through the peaceful trails of Preservation Park, I was thinking of a friend who had recently lost her sister to Cancer after a protracted battle. It seemed they were both with me for a while as I made my way. Then, as I came to a sharp turn in the trail my way was blocked by 2 young deer, frozen in place, and staring at me. Within a few seconds we were all on our way. It was a pleasant but short break from my ride and my thoughts. My ride continued and I stopped at Riverside Park for a quick lunch break and found a bench next to the children's play center and carrousel. Both were busy with energetic joyous young children with their parents enjoying the beautiful day.

They were the faces of children that I hope never learn of cancer, but know that the Great Cycle Challenge is here to help those that do. That is why I ride every year and why I ask for your support. Please donate to support this important cause if you can. Thank you

  • The 2025 Great Cycle Challenge begins.
    20 May 2025

This is my 8th year in the Great Cycle Challenge and the need to support Children's  Cancer research continues.

As it has been every year, for me, one of the most important parts of the Challenge for me is the, financial and moral support I receive in preparation for and during the GCC from supporters.

This year that support is more important than ever as in Feb, I was given May 1st, as the date for back surgery that I had been long awaiting. The surgery went well as did the follow up visit last week. What remains now, is getting the bones and nerves to heal enough for me to return to riding outdoors by August. If not, I will be able to ride on a stationary mount indoors. That approval will come at the of July.

Either way I will ride for the Great Cycle  Challenge in August this year. The distance traveled may be substantially less than previous years, but the effort and desire to help will be there. Please help this important effort by donating to my ride and supporting Children's Cancer research as you can.

For more detail on the 2025  GCC  this link to my page has all the detail you may need.
