To my beautiful daughter, who has overcome many challenges in her life, but still continues to shine throughout it all. I love you to the moon and back!

My Story

1 Aug 2025

This August, I am taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer!

Why? 43 years ago, my little 18 month old daughter, Alison, was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma; this is the disease that Terry Fox had and died from. For the next two years it was an intense regimen of hospitals, chemo and surgery. Part way through, I feared that we would lose her. Thankfully, she was one of the lucky ones, and is now 45 years old with three beautiful children.

However, still today, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year; it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada. Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.

My goal is to support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.

Please support me by making a donation to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Thank you.

  • GCC 2025 Ride #11 Monday, August 18, 2025
    19 Aug 2025

Yesterday's ride is the last one until I return from camping on August 27th. That leaves me just 3 days to wrap up my personal challenge of 200 km. But, I am confident I can do it!

The ride was a cooler.one..temperatures had dropped to 10 degrees overnight and even with three layers and gloves it was cool..But smooth..I know that route really well now and am happy to stick to it. The photo below is of some of the many wildflowers you see along the trail.

When I got home I felt tired and as the day progressed I realized I was getting sick. My throat was sore and I felt out of sorts. The good news is today I am no worse, in fact feel like it will be a very short lived cold. Lots of vitamin C and gargling etc.

So, this is it until August 28th, when I hope to get back.in the saddle and get at least another 25 km under my belt.

    Thanks everyone for your support..

  • GCC 2025 ride #10 --20.12 km todsy
    18 Aug 2025

Today was my longest rde to date and puts me just under 150 km.

Was a cooler day after a bit of rain this morning making riding conditions pleasant despite some wind.

The main attraction today was the close encounter with two Wild Turkey hens and about 20 chicks of various ages, spread across the trail.

They were pretty funny, running back and forth. Got some photos but then decided it was time to continue. I ran my tinny little bell and they just scattered like a bomb had dropped. Some ran off the road, some took immediate flight into a near by tree and the larger mama hen took off down the trail as if pursued by the devil. She finally got airborne. It was quite funny to watch; kinda wished I had a video going to catch all the action. I'm sure no bird was injured in the excitement, or I sure hope not

(although these turkeys are quite a nuisance to farmers).

The rest of the ride was nice..covered some new ground and may try to do it again. But, tomorrow is a work day, so maybe Tuesday.

  • Day 9--August.25, 2025. Another 15km in the books!
    16 Aug 2025

With today's ride I am up to 125k km. I am finding the ride creates it's own energy. I will be taking tomorrow off but will be back on Sunday to start my final series of rides for the last 75km. I am quite hopeful I can make it happen!

The photo below was taken today from the trail....I love the recently harvested fields and the tree standing sentinel, in the distance!

  • GCC ride #7--a wet one
    13 Aug 2025

Teased the rain gods this morning and lost..got wet due to some long overdue rain. But that's OK...the ride was great.

I feel I'm finding my stride..did 15km in just an hour..which included a couple of stops for photos and to hide under some trees to dry off my phone! Close to 100 km..tomorrow should do it!

    12 Aug 2025

After the great bike tire repair yesterday I headed out around 8:00 am, with a temperature of around 24 C, and within slightly over an hour clocked another 15 km. It was a great ride! Felt very good and not too tired. Hope to do it again tomorrow, heading towards 100km!

  • Bike fixed thanks to Mark Killoran
    11 Aug 2025

After I had posted on FB that I suffered a flat tire on Sunday, just as I was leaving the house, Mark, a friend who shares the same birthday as me, contacted me and offered to save me driving to Renfrew (30 minutes away) and to come today and fix it. As promised he came and in a little over an hour, in extreme heat, got the job done. (See pic.) Thank you Mark! I hope to ride again tomorrow to get a bit closer to my km goal.

    6 Aug 2025

After a two day break from riding, because of work, I got back in the saddle and put in 15.34 km this morning. This puts me at 56km total..1/4 of my goal, and it's not even been a week, yet.

And, the good news is that the MRC trail maintenance guys have cleared the trees that had fallen across the PPJ trail. So nice to just ride along without having to over or around obstacles.

Beautiful day..stopped and took a couple of pics that I'll post later. .

  • Day 3 down
    3 Aug 2025

I might have hit my stride, today! This is good, especially after yesterday's brutal ride, coming back to town along the PPJ from Moffat Rd.

Multiple tress down..had to drag / lift my bike over and under the downed trees..I was exhausted by the end.

Today, I went east from town, again..there are trees down that way too but you can easily get over or around them. All this damage is from the huge wind storm on July 24th.

AnywY, it was a good ride and I clocked 15km within the hour..so that will be my route, until the trees get cleared west of town.

    Thanks everyone, for your support!
