I'm Riding For
Cecil Kirkman
I can remember the first cause I wanted to fight for was cancer as I had multiple family members fighting the disease. Most of them fought multiple recurrences but when cancer took my Uncle Cecil's life a spark was lit inside me that led me towards supporting this cause. He was one of the most positive, intelligent and loving people I've ever know even though I only spent a short amount of time with him until cancer cut his life short. In saying this, I ride for my uncle in spirit, but I also ride to raise money towards supporting the research and care of the 1000+ children that are diagnosed with cancer each year in Canada.
My Story
This month I have decided to fulfill a cycling dream of mine by biking from Calgary, AB to the far west coast of Canada. While my immediate route will stop in Victoria, BC my cycling partner and I will be getting a ride from Victoria over to Tofino where we will continue to cycle until the end of the month.
While the cycling part may only be my dream, being able to fundraise for kids with cancer at the SickKids Foundation is a dream that I share with ever other cyclist that participates in this challenge as well as every child, parent, and other person that has been affected by cancer.
While currently around 84% of children with cancer in Canada reach remission within a few years, it is because of funding (in-part through donations) that has increased survival rates and ease of treatment throughout history. Because of this, it is so important that we continue to fundraise and donate to continue helping more and more children that are struck with this disease.
So why kids?
Not only are there currently people in my life that would not be around if it were not for the success of their cancer treatments during childhood, but additionally the money put towards a child's cancer treatment may mean that they get to experience the world and find passions to explore as they grow like I have with cycling.
