I started this journey in 2021in the midst of the pandemic. After doing more research in children's cancer I thought back on a student of mine who was in remission when I taught her. What seemed like everyday normal things of playing outside during recess and having little events in class became extra special because it was a first for her. After missing a whole year of school due to doctors appointments and hospital visits, she was able to finally be herself in my class without being treated differently. When other kids told stories about trips and vacations, she told stories about visits to "the big hospital" (SickKids). For others, Grade 1 is a big milestone but for her, this was her biggest achievement after beating cancer.
