I'm Riding For
Jordan

Emma was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in March of 2023. Her mom was one of my students when she was Emma's age. She has gone through her treatment and is now home, doing normal 11-12 year kid things. Sterling is now 6 He has gone through three YEARS of chemo for ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia— a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many lymphocytes). He is going for his next check up this week and things are looking good. His grandmother and I were in Gr 6 and 7 together! There is a lot of suffering and worry behind these stories. And both families have been supported through their journeys by incredible staff at Sick Kids in Ontario and BC. It's for them I ride. and for other families who are living through this with their kids.
My Story
And here we are again... 4 years in. Another challenge to complete. Still aiming for 750 km and $2500 for the month.
The 750 km might be just a little optimistic. I've discovered I really oughtn't be riding a gazillion kilometres every day. (DUH!) My body does NOT thank me for it.
In March I started weight training, geared to cycling, functional fitness, lifting heavy stuff, as we ought to be doing and... keeping the hips and quads and hamstrings and knees and core in alignment. Which doesn't happen when I ride a gazillion kilometres every day. It also means that two days a week, I'm into the city for a one hour workout as as much time in the recovery room (compression boots, full body massage, cold table, etc) as I can. This takes up a GOOD chunk of the day, what with the driving into the city and back as well as the workout/recovery.
So... I'll get rolling on it. My trainer, Megan, is also a cyclist, so she knows what I'm working towards. But I do have to commit to fuelling before I get on the bike (so that means no early dawn, get up and go rides), to stretching at least SOME, and... recovery.
I'm still riding for Emma... she is the daughter of a former student who was suddenly diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia last year at the age of 10. The great news is that she is fully cancer-free and mostly 'back to normal' for an 11 year old. For me, she represents the capacity we have to heal and the life-affirming care and treatment all the kids at Sick Kids get.
There are also several ambassadors I'll introduce you to over the month. Your donations make a difference. They spur me on to ride as much as I can in August and they help provide the research and materials these kids desperately need.
Many thanks, as they say.. in advance.
