My Story
You might recall last summer, when I was fundraising for the Heart and Stroke Foundation Ride for Heart. This summer, I'm supporting a different cause.
I chose the Ride for Heart last year because of my connections to Heart Disease through my work as a Research Coordinator in Cardiac Rehabilitation, and personal connections to stroke through my good friend Bruce and my Godfather.
But I have far too many personal connections to Cancer. My Dad died of lung cancer. My Godmother, breast cancer. Then a cousin. Then partners of friends. Through the course of our lives, we will all experience losing parents, other elders and some of our peer group. It sucks. It's almost always a shock.
Then cancer started coming after my friend's children, like Emma, who has recently suffered through treatment for Leukemia. Her mom, who used to live next door, and who used to work with me in Cardiac Rehabilitation, blogged about their mind-boggling experience at the https://emmasleukemiajourney.blogspot.com.
Kids. I said it before: No one should outlive their children. To me, it’s unfathomable. But to others it’s an unbearable reality. This year I'm hoping you will support my participation in the Great Cycling Challenge to raise funds to help kids and support SickKids Foundation to allow them to continue their work in developing cancer treatments. I've set the lofty goal of riding 1609km in August... for us old people, that's 1000 miles. Blame it on The Proclaimers: I might not walk 500 miles, but I would ride 500 miles, and I would ride 500 more...
August will conclude with Ironman Canada, a serendipitous coincidence, though that might not be the capstone of my 1000 miles. But I'll get there, eventually... while for some families, their journey never ends.
